"Causland Park is located between M and N avenues, and between 7th and 8th streets. Formerly known as the Great Northern Park after the railroad that originally owned the land, the open space was developed as a unique memorial park bordered by a colorful, patterned wall built of native rock form the San Juan Islands, to honor deceased World War I veterans. The park was designed by French-Canadian architect John Baptiste LePage (1857-1939) and named for Harry Causland of Guemes Island who was killed in Europe in 1918.
The August 4th 1919 edition of the Anacortes American reported, ”Work began this week on rock wall at Causland Park:” Architect LePage took men to Waldron Island where he found sandstone of quality and color for wall.” Following its completion, Causland Park soon became a focal point for many city activities and a backdrop for important events such as Labor Day events and the Marineers’ Pageant."
