We still have one here in Bolsa Chica, I guess the other one went back to Texas or where ever he came from. Hunts like a green heron sitting on rock waiting, then stabbing prey in the water. Does some wading, but not as much as other heron/egrets do. Hope he stays here. Tricolored is very close in size and weight to the snowy egret and the lil blue heron.

Very rare visitor to southern cal and we have 2 of them. Maybe they don't like hurricanes. They have a very stealthy foraging technique. They get very low and are pretty active. Not so much as reddish egrets, but more so than snowy egrets, and the herons. Seems to me that their feet are larger proportionally than the other herons and egrets.

Great egrets and great blue herons hunt gophers pretty regular in some of our parks. They will freeze above the opening of a gopher hole and wait and when the gopher sticks his/her head out he/she is speared. Better than a gopher trap. Oh, and can he swallow it?.......no problem.

While waiting for the tricolored to show, the reddish egret showed up to give up a few shots. About 5 minutes later the alpha red showed up and chased him off. He didn't want the spot, he just didn't want any other reds using it. These guys always look angry to me.
