Very rare visitor to southern cal and we have 2 of them. Maybe they don't like hurricanes. They have a very stealthy foraging technique. They get very low and are pretty active. Not so much as reddish egrets, but more so than snowy egrets, and the herons. Seems to me that their feet are larger proportionally than the other herons and egrets.

Normally a resident of Florida, Louisiana and Texas. We have had 1 or 2 visitors in southern calif. for about 3 years now..

Taking timeout from his dancing to do a bit of hunting. Actually that's not true, the dancing is part of his hunting technique. I thought I was finished with this guy, but I really like the stalking position. This bird looks like a hybrid to me......reddish egret/tri-colored heron.

I call him the dancer.........He jumps, he twirls, he spins, he cloaks, he is a sight to behold.
