Yesterday I stopped at a duck spot to scout it a little and to retrieve my blanket blind that I forgotten there last week (amazingly it was still there, I guess it being camouflage and all helped no one to notice it). I saw a group of ducks on the far side including Hooded Mergansers, which I have been eager to get, so I laid down and thought maybe (but highly unlikely) I would get lucky. While I did not get them to come close, fortune was on my side as a group of Common Mergansers flew in. They did not see me at all and the swung to my side. I didn't see their approach, but I was very still and they came quite close. The light, filtered a bit, was nice and I managed to get 3 images out of the set that I really liked and are among my best Common Mergansers to date. Here you can see some reflections and lovely warm tones in the backgrounds.
