Looking onto the Northern Fells, Carrock Fell left of frame.
C12 church with lots of help from the Victorians after an 1821 restoration.. Situated next to Sowerby Hall which may explain its isolated situation.
One of the most beautifully positioned churches in Cumbria.
The bench at the entrance is rather out of keeping with the building.

I lingered round them under that benign sky, watching the moths fluttering among the heath and hare bells, listening to the soft wind breathing through the grass, and wondered how any one could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth.

The outside is mainly Victorian the original church goes back to the 10th century. A rather nice watercolour inside the church shows the interior before modernisation. Dedicated to St. Bega, an Irish lady escaping persecution fled to Cumbria. She landed at St. Bees and has a number of Churches
dedicated to her.
