My book choice is "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker. I was so moved by it when I first read it in college back in the 80s. It was also made into a movie and a Broadway musical.

Alice Walker won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction.
