This sculpture belonged to the Cooper Family who lived in this building before it became an Art Gallery, but they bought the Veiled Lady to display in their country house, Cowick Hall near Goole in East Yorkshire. The sculptor is unknown, but it is probably by Rafaelle Monti (1818-1881) who worked in Milan, and was known for works of this kind. The Coopers visited Milan in 1879, but there is no evidence that they bought this sculpture there. The lady's face is very beautiful indeed.
