This mountain dominates so many views in the Lake District, and even in Wasdale where she sits in company with the Scafell Range she reigns over the territory. A great mountain in every way.
After I took this photograph, a group of younger people in a car stopped me to ask if they were going the right way for Scafell Pike, which they obviously intended to climb. I told them to follow their noses to the car park at Wasdale Head, and then ask again before they started. Driving up the Wasdale road for the first time, you could easily be forgiven for thinking that Great Gable was the Pike. I have climbed both from several directions, and in a sneaky way, I am far more proud of my ascent of Gable. Perhaps (s)he's the King, not the Queen.
On the day we got to the summit of Great Gable (at the third time of asking) we stood at Westmorland Cairn and watched as the clouds blew away from the tops to reveal Wastwater in all its glory, the complete reverse of this view. It was magnificent, and a major highlight of my hill walking life.
