The simply constructed early Victorian hotel is the oldest existing building in Port Adelaide.

In November 1849 Robert Sanders, assuming his pub would be conveniently located at the Port end of a proposed single-line, horse-drawn train route down Port Road from Adelaide, named his new hotel the “Railway”.

In March 1851 the new publican, Charles Calton, renamed it the “Port Admiral Family Hotel”. When the railway to Port Adelaide opened in 1856, the Port Admiral was finally able to cater for train travellers.
