St John’s was built on the generosity of Osmond Gilles, one of the more flamboyant of South Australia’s early founders.
On Saturday, October 19, 1839 the foundation stone was laid by Lieutenant Colonel George Gawler, Governor of the Province.

Dating from 1891-92, St Corantyn is a significant and well preserved example of the work of architect George Klewitz Soward. It was built for Soward’s daughter Eliza and son-in-law Charles Hornabrook who was the licencee of the York Hotel.
