'Lochend' is significant because of its association with the early pastoral pioneer, Charles Campbell, after whom Campbelltown is named. Built c.1844, the building is also of particular significance for its (probable) association with the work of one of South Australia's most noted early architects, George Strickland Kingston. It seems likely that 'Lochend' is one of Kingston's earlier private commissions. The house was, in more recent times, associated with the market gardening history of the eastern districts of the River Torrens.
