These cliffs at Hunstanton, Norfolk are special. They are formed from different coloured rocks laid down at the bottom of the oceans between 93 and 112 million years ago. They are a Site of Special Scientific Interest for their geology. It is one of the most important geological sites in the UK.
The layers are -
White chalk, almost entirely prehistoric plankton.
Red Chalk, a rare limestone. Its colour comes from Limonite, a type of iron ore
Carstone, made of sand particles bound together with a cement of iron oxide which gives it the rusty brown colour.
