By the time we had walked around the lake and tried various angles, this being one of the "classic views" or put another way "done to death shots" the house and gardens were now open to the general public and there was a constant stream coming through the arches as well as people playing on the lawn in front of the lake. The sky was becoming threatening with fast moving dark grey clouds and the light was changing just as quick. I just wanted one frame of the house illuminated against that greying background and for once luck was on my side. No sooner had I packed everything away, the rain came but job done!

If you stay on the main pathway (as most visitors do) you’ll never notice these derelict cottages offset and hidden behind the barn cottages. I must admit I’d never spotted them myself in previous visits and even after taking a couple of snaps hadn’t paid close attention to the architecture. If I had, my OCD and tendency for symmetry would have had a meltdown.
It was only on the way back to meet up with Kathy who was now talking to a National Trust guide did he point out some of the features of the two sets of cottages. It transpired that these where built from the remains of one of the demolished main houses, built way before the current house. However, the quantity surveyor (if they existed at the time) must have been on the beer when he calculated the materials needed for the two conjoined cottages. Note the two different doorways and that there are only five upper windows. Apparently, there wasn’t enough salvaged stone to fully build two identical cottages but the builder thought no one would notice if he just spaced out the fourth and fifth windows.

A very spur of the moment trip to Lyme Park to photograph the house reflected in the lake. Only the house and gardens don't open until 10:30am. A couple of hours to kill... not much fun for a non-photographer.

Been on my bucket list for quite some time. Didn’t bother checking the weather conditions… just went for a morning out and the compulsory full breakfast in Hebden Bridge afterwards. Was taken back by the recommended car park at Clough Hole… very hilly and sections of single-track road leading to it. It’s only ¾ mile walk to the actual mill from the car park, but very steep if you take the direct route down the boulder steps or the meandering longer route… either way I was knackered on the way back. Need to restart my fitness campaign again!
Having said all that, quite happy with how this has turned out. Better conditions and this would make a stunning print, especially with winter snow on the ground.
