1044 200-2 is the class 1044.2 locomotive with the lowest number. The engine was originally delivered as 1044 256 in 1991, being built with salvaged parts of 1044.51, a 1044.0 originally delivered in 1980 and damaged beyond repair in a crash in Wolfurt in 1988.
Although 1044 256 was constructed as part of the 1044.2 project, it lacked some features of the newly built locomotives. Therefore, the machine was renumbered 1044 200 in 1994. To fill up the number gap, the last 1044.2 locomotive, 1044 291, was delivered as 1044 256 (II) in 1995.
Three years after its renumbering, 1044 200 leaves Wien-Südbahnhof piloting IC 159 'Croatia' to Zagreb Gl. kol, 29 May 1997
