The photo on the left is of Kent Monkman dressed up as Miss Chief in the a video in the exhibition.
“Dance to Miss Chief” is a playful critique of the German fascination with North American Indigenous Peoples. Meant to invite the viewer to dance along with her and her audience of fictitious “Indians” from Karl May’s German Western films, this video celebrates Monkman’s alter-ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle and her on-screen romance with Winnetou, the leading man in May’s films.

Famous for her dramatic gestures, modern dancer Mary Wigman (1886-1973) dances both with and without music or with percussion as her only Accompaniment. Here, Nolde captured her in dramatic movement, her limbs showing through a gauzy material of her costume and her arms raised theatrically.
