The Hanalei Valley Lookout is probably one of the most photographed lookouts in Hawaii. It is situated in the north of Kaua'i. It is a stunningly beautiful place. We only had one day in this area as we were staying in the south. The fields below are Taro fields and the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. It is worth zooming in on the image at the mountain range to see the numerous waterfalls cascading down over the mountains. I would have loved to have spent more time here.

"And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along makin' me strong" Doobie Brothers (Give me the Beat!)
The beach makes it's own music and rhythm and goes along way to freeing the soul and helping me to feel better when I'm blue.
Another of the most photographed places in Hawaii-Hanalei Bay with its iconic pier. It is known for its classic sunsets in the Summer. I really didn't get any of the classic sunsets during my two weeks in Hawaii. It was winter and apparently due to the trade winds, usually leaving dull grey clouds devoid of colour. However, there was a lovely glow on this evening as the sun dipped below the Napali Mountains and changed colours from pink hues and later a golden glow.

When Mark Twain first saw the Waimea Canyon, he dubbed it the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. As we were driving up the winding road toward the first lookout, I caught a glimpse of a rainbow though a gap in the trees. I wanted to jump out of the car there and then but common sense prevailed and luckily there was a space and we pulled into the lookout.
When I looked out into the canyon, I said out loud to no-one in particular, this is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. A lady was standing near-by and said she felt the same way. I know a picture often can't convey the beauty of a scene the way you see it and feel it but I hope this goes someway to doing that.
We have to have rain or a storm for there to be a Rainbow. It's the reward after going through the deluge and signals new life.
I really hope that the New Year brings rainbows to all of you, particularly those that have had a difficult time this year.

The Hawaiian Islands are an important nesting site for tropical Pacific seabirds such as the Brown Booby. Due to predation and habitat disturbance, many nest off shore on the smaller islands or like the red footed Booby nest in trees where they are afforded some protection from Mongoose.
This one was taken while on a boat tour of the southern coastline of Kaua'i.
Needs to be viewed large to see how gorgeous they are!

This was the very first lookout we stopped at along the Waimea Canyon Drive when the rainbow took my breath away.
Kaua'i is sometimes referred to as the place of the rainbows. The Island is one of the wettest places in the world and it is always raining somewhere on the Island. The rainbows are intense and can last for hours.
