The weather hasn't been particularly kind to us but then it is winter in Hawaii!

This image was taken as sunset approached at Shipwreck Beach, Poipu, the southern end of Kaua'i. It had been raining on and off all day and there was a break in the rain so I quickly set up. Wtihin about two shots, the heavens opened up again and I got a good soaking, If you look in the bottom left corner you will see a wedding party.
A very wet Wedding.

I pulled out the Big Big stopper for this exposure. How good is the Sherpa to sit perfectly still for the almost 3 minutes it took to make this image!

Only joking-he is not that well trained., I took two images and combined them in Photoshop!

This is the Waimea Pier on the west coast of the Island of Kau'i. The town of Waimea became an important port after Captain Cooks visit in 1778. The original warf was built in 1865 to compete with the one at Koloa Landing as a Port-of Call for whaling.

The Islands of Hawaii are mid ocean mountain tops so the original fauna and flora established as chance arrivals that could survive the 2,500 mile ocean journeys from the nearest lands. The only land mammal was a bat and there were no amphibians, reptiles, mosquitoes or ants. Many of the birds and plants flourished in this environment. birds could loose the power of flight without the forces of predation at work. Unfortunately, with the arrival of humans from Islands to the south about 1000 years ago, half of Hawaiis unique birds became extinct. Following Captain Cooks :discovery" of the Islands, things got much worse for the remaining species and today, very few remaining endemic species survive. The majority of the birds are introduced, such as this African Waxbill.

The Hanalei Valley Lookout is probably one of the most photographed lookouts in Hawaii. It is situated in the north of Kaua'i. It is a stunningly beautiful place. We only had one day in this area as we were staying in the south. The fields below are Taro fields and the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. It is worth zooming in on the image at the mountain range to see the numerous waterfalls cascading down over the mountains. I would have loved to have spent more time here.
