"Lost
On a painted sky
Where the clouds are hung
For the poet's eye
You may find him
If you may find him
There
On a distant shore
By the wings of dreams
Through an open door
You may know him" Johnathon Livingston Seagull- Neil Diamond

I know-two references to Neil Diamond songs in a row. It all started yesterday when this song-Johnathon Livingston Seagull came up on Spotify. It immediately caught my attention and there is just something about the words and music combined to create the mood of the song, that embarrassingly made me cry. The pretty crappy video clip to the song did the same thing. I must have been having a weak moment or two yesterday.

Anyway, I thought it would suit this artistic (if I may be so bold as to use that word) interpretation of the boats on the water at Coles Bay. At the time, the sky and water were almost one so I knew I wanted something like this as my end result.

And Nothing Matters --- Gustav Weindorfer one of the early pioneers of the area.

About half way up to Crater Lake, the landscape changes completely from the open alpine moors of the last upload to an area of dense magical rainforest where the green of mosses carpets the tree trunks and forest floor.

A raised boardwalk guides you along the meandering creek with a series of waterfalls and rock pools along the way to Crater Falls.

It is easy to forget yourself and all your worries and believe in something other as you walk through this spell-binding place.

This is the start of the Overland Track. It is a 65 Km, 6 day trek beginning at Cradle Mountain and ending at Australia’s deepest lake – Lake St Clair. The first section forms part of the Crater Lake Circuit which the 3 hour walk we did.

Up there with my favourite walks ever. It takes you past waterfalls, lakes and magical forests.

This section begins at Ronnies Creek. Unfortunately, it wasn't always easy to take images without the family in it given I was always lagging behind taking photos!

If you look closely you will see a wombat which are characteristic of this part of the trek. I will upload a closer image of him tomorrow.

The next few uploads will be of the walk to give those who do not know this part of the country a taste of one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Australia.

On my visit to Tasmania back in February, it was the this part of the Port Arthur prison that I found particularly haunting.
It was called the Separatist Prison.

The Prison operated from 1833 until 1877 and held many of the convicts transported to Van Demons land, primarily from the UK. Sometimes for quite petty crimes such as my great grandfather (though he never ended up in Port Arthur). After awhile, Corporal punishment was viewed as counterproductive as it was thought to harden criminals further so they came up with a new more “enlightened” form of punishment based on Britain’s Pentonville Prison- A prison of complete Silence.

The inmates were kept in line with forced social, visual, auditory isolation. The institution used the “Silent System,” in which all inmates were only referred to as numbers and remained quiet at all times. They wore hoods or masks during the short times they were allowed out of their cells, mainly to visit the chapel. Even there they were separated by booths and watched by 4 armed guards but it was a time where they were sometimes able to sneak notes to each other. For any misdemeanour a man was locked in total darkness and silence for between several hours and 30 days on bread and water. After 3 days he was taken out for an hour’s exercise each day. Inmates spent from 4-12 months in this part of the prison.

The theory was intended to give prisoners time to reflect upon their crimes. However, the result of sensory deprivation - no human contact, sound and touch -is now known as torture. This often resulted in severe mental illness from which many did not recover.

This image is a blending of two. The window which reflects one arm of the prison with tiny cells either side and the other is photographs of many of the men that were held here. Some were teenagers.

We know now the importance of human connection for our health and wellbeing. Even more so in these pandemic times when many of us are separated from those we love.

Looking out across Coles Bay, as the sun was rising, the vestiges of the pink that had lit up the sky earlier, left their imprint- a gentle weave through the blues of the early morning sky.
