#Enough is Enough # Me Too

A few of the signs from yesterdays March4Justice in Melbourne.

These protest marches in Australia have been fueled by recent events in our Australian Parliament. Woman are furious, not only because of the events themselves, but the appalling handling by our Parliamentarians of rape and sexual harassment allegations.

Just to give you a taste of how out of touch our leaders are in terms of their response to the protests-

The Prime Minister and his staff would not walk out (a few hundred meters) and listen to or engage with the Protesters who gathered outside Parliament House. Instead, our Prime Minister offered to meet a small delegation behind closed doors. The very same closed doors where many of the allegations have taken place.

In his opening remarks in Question Time yesterday, Mr Morrison said it was "right and good" that people were able to congregate in peaceful protests as tens of thousands gathered to demand action against gendered violence in Australia.
"Not far from here, such marches, even now, are being met with bullets, but not here in this country, Mr Speaker," he said.

I can’t respond better than Jane Caro’s:

How Good Is Australia? You can get raped in Parliament but you are unlikely to get shot protesting about it

I am tired of beings scared. I am angry. This relates straight back to photography (as well as almost every aspect of the life in the day of being female) and the fact that I will rarely go out and photograph on my own. Instead I have to rely on others to feel safe. I resent that. I see my male colleges photographing on their own all the time, a privilege that I don't have.

I am away for work the next few days so will catch up when I can.

We are “borrowing the world from our children” and we are not playing nice. We may be the first generation in history to leave our world worse off for our children.

At a time where I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the troubles around the world, speechless and heartbroken at the things we do to each other and our planet, yesterdays Strike for Climate Change gave me hope. The march belonged to the children, the students who came out in the tens of thousands, holding signs and chanting for change. For many, including my daughter (not pictured), it will have been a first. Hopefully, not the last.

They were joined by us old folk, who came along to support them and their dream for a better future - a war cry for action.

I fear they will not be heard yet but maybe when politicians realise that the children are only a few years off voting, they might be compelled to take action, albeit kicking and screaming.

Keep chanting for change young people. One day you will be heard. I am proud.
