The old Russell Street Police Head Quarters -cream brick building sandwiched between the tall buildings on the right are famous (infamous?) for a number of reasons.
The front steps of the headquarters were used in the opening scenes of the classic 1970s Australian Police Drama-Division 4.
Then in 1986, it was rocked by a bombing resulting in the first Australian policewoman to be killed in the line of duty.
Perhaps lesser known was the shenanigans that took place in the car-park behind the Police Station in the late 1980s. When the Sherpa and I were ”going out” we lived on opposite sides of Melbourne. This darkened car-park was our meeting point to starting our city adventures
--and end them.
We used it as a safe spot to go “parking”-we had police protection-right ;) . We thought we were pretty discrete until a police officer came, tapped on our window and shone his bright torch into the car. “What are you two up to”? Ahhhh not much Officer. “Then move along...” All I can say is thank goodness for the blanket ;-)
