I had followed another set of SD40-2's east from the James Loop to here, perhaps the most famous overlook on the Feather River route.

With the shadow covering the valley rapidly, I was fortunate to have this turn up at 16.45.

I've enlarged the picture to try to identify the locos, the leading two are C&NW C44-9W's, probably 8625 and 8646, with UP SD60M 6233 tailing.

This was the view using my Canon FD 135/ f2.0 lens, as the train passed under the Highway 70 bridge.

I think the SD40-2's had probably passed this train a little further north in the Canyon, there appear to be crossing loops at both Merlin and Rodgers Flat.

I posted some shots her earlier, and this is an eastbound rounding the curve a short distance before crossin gthe West Branch of the Feather River on the dual level bridge.

The tunnel that allows the passage of the railroad around the top curve of the loop can just be seen towards the rear of the train.

The power is of three SD40-2's, 3682, 3681 and 3549.

A view of the train a short distance before Pulga as it heads up the Canyon. I'm not entirely certain where this is - any help gratefully received - and so the map location is a best guess.
