These birds can stay still and I can hand-hold this lens with this body/IBIS for a 1s exposure if I shoot a burst of 5-10 or so. So with a reasonable amount of luck, a non-shaky frame will coincide with the bird's calmness and this shot can be made, no surprises there. The surprise was that I could get any colors at all in that light. This scene would have been lit by the almost-monochromatic sodium highway lighting a few years ago and a muddy B&W would be the best you could hope to get. The light there that night, to the extent it existed at all, appeared just as yellow to my eye but it was different as I discovered in post. They must have switched to LEDs that match sodium for the color temperature but have more output across the spectrum.
