Notre Dame de la Font Sainte throne in its autumnal setting - Cantal - Auvergne - France - Europe
A 1.230 mètres d’altitude sur la commune de Saint-Hippolyte, le sanctuaire de la Font Sainte, au-dessus de la vallée de Cheylade, est un lieu de pèlerinages depuis 1886, repris de temps beaucoup plus anciens, aux VIe et VIIe siècles. Il s’est transmis qu’une statue de la Vierge Marie fut rapportée d’Orient au début du XIIe siècle, par les seigneurs d’Apchon ayant participé à une croisade. Cette statue aurait été placée dans un modeste oratoire d’où l’eau jaillit du rocher.
A ses pieds, une source particulièrement pure continue de jaillir. « Elle a la particularité d’avoir toujours une même température à 5°. Elle ne tarit pas l’été et ne gèle pas l’hiver. Les analyses effectuées régulièrement sont toujours bonnes. Elle guérit tout et ne fait pas de mal », souligne le curé riomois.
Après la destruction de l’oratoire, au cours des guerres de religion, la sainte Vierge demanda la reconstruction de l’oratoire et l’élévation d’une chapelle : elle apparut vers 1740 à une paysanne de Rastoul, Marie Galvain, pour le lui demander. Marie alla s’en entretenir avec l’évêque de Clermont, Mgr Massillon, dont dépendait l’archiprêtré de Mauriac et, avec son accord, elle recueillit des offrandes qui permirent de construire la niche puis l’oratoire en 1743/1744.
Ce n’est cependant qu’en 1835 qu’une première chapelle fut édifiée, avant que la chapelle actuelle, commencée en 1886, ne fut bâtie, tout en conservant, fautes des moyens nécessaires, la nef du précédent sanctuaire.
La fête de l’Assomption de la Vierge Marie, la fête des bergers, fin août, qui existe depuis 1870, et la fête de la Nativité de Marie, le 8 septembre, sont des temps de très beaux pèlerinages au cœur de l’Auvergne et de prières à Notre-Dame de la Font Sainte, sur cette Montagne sainte.
En début et fin de saison estivale, se déroulent les deux processions de la « montade » et de la « dévalade » (9 septembre 2012) lors desquelles la statue de Notre-Dame de la Font Sainte monte, de l’église Saint-Hippolyte à la chapelle de la Font Sainte, puis, en redescend, le 9 septembre.
