D1062 'Western Courier', superbly restored to her original maroon livery, captured in the bay platform at Kingswear in the summer of 1977. Withdrawn from traffic in 1974, the loco was purchased by the Western Locomotive Association in 1976 and taken to Swindon for restoration before being towed to the Torbay & Dartmouth Railway (now renamed the Dartmouth Steam Railway) in May, 1977. The following year she was moved with D1013 (visible here behind D1062) to the Severn Valley Railway where both are based still.

Shakhtinsk station, the distribution and collecting point for trains from the Shaktinsk area collieries of which there are four of. Shakhtinsk is around 50km west of Karagandy, Kazakhstan and a major deep coal mining area. At left TEM7A-0125 built 1990 at the Lyudinovo locomotive factory waits with a train of coal to transfer east to the Coal Enrichment plant no.1 ay Kyzyl, a journey of 20km including a reversal at Kyzyl. This huge locomotive is a ballasted 180tonne Bo+Bo-Bo+Bo locomotive designed for transfer and shunting manoeuvres where the additional traction effort required to move the trains requires such mass. The cast iron ballast weights amass to 25 tonnes, of which half is removable. Despite such weight, the locomotive generates only 2000hp.
On the right, TEM18DM-3457, a new Bryansk machinery building factory product, built 2023, leaves with a loaded coal transfer. This locomotive was dekliverd in Arcelor Mittal colours but has had the lettering removed from the large painted grey area on the bonnet doors. 14th of May 2024.
ТЭМ7А-0125 и ТЭМ18дм-3457 на Станции Шахтинск, Карагандинскя область, Казахстан.
Arrival at the edge of Shakhtinsk. A right turn down a dirt road takes us to the station, which is a control centre for this industrial railway. There are no passenger trains here. We are eyed up cautiously by the staff working around then station building, and not least by the crew of the TEM7A. Sven askes someone for permission to take photos here. Wait is the reply, we must ask the boss. But the boss is not present at her office today so it is deemed ok to do so as there is no-one official to object to our activities, and though there seems to be a little tension everyone is polite here, as are we. The departing TEM18 gives us a whistle of acknowledgement and continues on its way. We do not overstay our welcome. Returning to the car we head back to the main road and further, towards the nearby collieries, which there are four of beyond here.
