XPComment:	Built in around 1841 the Lion Tavern is named after the Lion steam engine that ran with Stephenson's rocket on the rail line between Liverpool and Manchester: the engine is still in existence today. . . Until 1914 the pub was smaller than originally built, however in that year Robert Cain purchased the pub next door and amalgamated the two. The current corridor layout dates from then and is copied in other Merseyside inns. The interior is little altered since.. . The age of the building means that The Lion is the oldest building in continuous use as a pub in Liverpool.. . The quality of the building is recognised by the Grade Two listing applied by English Heritage and by the inclusion of the Lion in the Campaign for Real Ale's National Register of Historic Buildings. There are only some 205 pubs recognised in this way. The quality of tile work is noted in the "Gazetteer" of the "Tiles and Architectural Society." The Lion Tavern lies within the Liverpool World Heritage Site.. . The Campaign for Real Ale has awarded the Lion the accolade of "most consistent beer quality on Merseyside" for the past three years. The award is made based on anonymous samplings and survey results. The licensee is the holder of the prestigious "Caskmarque" award for quality.. . A range of draught and bottled beers together with a selection of accessible wines are available seven days a week. Quizzes are held on Tuesdays at 7.30 and 9.30pm and food featuring a range of cheeses, award winning sausages and Southport Potted Shrimps are available Monday to Friday from 12.00-3.00pm with a reduced menu at other times. .
