Blackpool Centenary tram 648 (originally 651) at Fleetwood Ferry. Saturday 20 July 2013.

648 is now classified as a heritage tram in the Blackpool fleet. During the spring / summer of 2013 the external appearance and livery of the tram has been restored to a style similar to that it had when renumbered from 651 to 648 on Monday 01 January 1990.

However at the present time many details are incorrect or missing. Still to be applied is the beading that should be positioned immediately above the black headlight panel; this beading should also extend all around the tram body at the same level. A very thin white line immediately above the drivers / saloon windows where the roof commences has also not been applied. In this livery 648 never carried the BCT coat of arms on the side of the drivers cab and these need removing. The metal fender below the headlight panel is incorrect and looks completely out of place. The lifeguards have been painted green and should be painted black. There are also other detail differences as well.

648 retains the modern style hopper saloon windows and a different style of cab window than those fitted when the tram was new. Presumably it is unlikely that these will be replaced as the cost would be quite considerable and not justified.

Of most importance and noticeable straight away is that the livery is incorrect, the tram is in the lighter green and cream rather than the darker green and white that all the Centenary trams were painted in when new, there is certainly no excuse for this major blunder.

Hopefully the outstanding work and corrections will be applied to 648 during the winter of 2013 – 2014, but we shall see.
