The Tarleton railway branch line, view south, the site of Boat Yard Crossing Halt. Saturday 16 February 2013.

This 1¼ mile long line branched off the West Lancashire Railway (WLR) Company’s Preston to Southport line at Hesketh Bank and was opened to goods traffic in 1880, a goods shed was built at the end of the line adjacent to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Tarleton branch.

The line only operated passenger services for sixteen months from 03 June 1912 to 01 October 1913. This was operated by a “railmotor” which ran between Crossens and Tarleton. The terminus was called Tarleton Halt and was located a short distance north of the end of the line adjacent to the canals entrance lock, there was also an intermediate halt called Boat Yard Crossing Halt. It is not known when the goods service finished but the line was derelict by 1925, it is also not known when the line was lifted.

Site of the London Street Excursion Platforms (12 & 13), Chapel Street railway station, Southport. Saturday 17 August 2024

The expansion of Chapel Street station in 1914 completely wiped out the old London Street railway station site, however Chapel Street platforms 12 &13 were always referred to as the London Street Excursion Platforms. When Chapel Street station was rebuilt in in the early 1970s, platforms 7 – 13 were filled in with the whole area right up to London Street becoming a car park which is still in use today (2025). The current Chapel Street railway station has virtually reverted back to the area it covered pre 1914.
