Ty2 249 sits on the inspection pit of the Wolsztyn (Poland) roundhouse on a cold February night in 1991. The fireman has finished checking the running gear in the pitch darkness and has disposed of his flare between the tender wheels to let it burn down. The 50-year old 2-10-0 was one of ten active steamers at the Wolsztyn shed that winter.

On February 27, 1991 Ol49-67 was pulling a passenger train to Lezno. I remember well the dirty dirt road I had to drive to reach this location near Wlozakowice. This was about the only spot with a considerable grade.

In the fading daylight of a February day in 1991 the sleek Ol49-70 is ready with a passenger train from Wolsztyn to Sulechow.

From 1951 through 1954 the Polish builder Fablok built 115 of these light passenger steam engines. With a top speed of 62.5 mph (100 km/h) these weren't the fastest but met the needs.

I didn't ask the engineer to take a pose, but he sure took pride in his profession. And the Rollei SL66 was a good portrait camera of the old days. Shot on Agfapan 100, developed in Tetenal Emofin liquid.

Cigarette break

Boilermakers and welders wait for a boiler to be turned over. Meanwhile they have smoke until they can get back to work. In 1991 there was still a number of steam locomotive overhauls done at the Piła shops in Poland. On March 1, 1991 I had the chance of visiting the shops before I returned home after a few days of going after the last active steamers in western Poland.
