In response to the sharp increase in American mobility, independently owned roadside motels rapidly materialized along the nation’s thoroughfares. In an effort to attract business in a highly competitive market, many motel owners embraced exotic themes. The Polynesian-themed motel was a natural extension of the mainland’s fascination with the South Pacific. With names like Kon Tiki, Kona Kai, and Waikiki, tropical motels once dotted the country. Get your sun hat on and Kodak camera ready… because we are taking a mid-century road trip to paradise. It’s time for MOTEL TIKI!
