Ad that appeared in a San Jose Mercury News insert called "COOK BOOK" - Sunday, September 2, 1956.

At the time, Russell's MODERN HOUSE was located at 2375 El Camino Real in Santa Clara. There's still a Russell's Furniture in Santa Clara but apparently the store moved a bit up the street.

I couldn't fit the associated copy for this ad into the scanner but it is great fun to read...

"Many are the people from Metropolitan San Jose and the upper peninsula who are not even furniture shopping - find it refreshing to drive out where we have no parking problem and OH! and AH! at the new styles and colors as they browse through our fabulous displays - which are forever changing and cannot all be seen... anywhere else.
Why not pay us a visit? You too will find it a pleasant and worthwhile experience..."

Dick Yee was an entrepreneur who once owned a chain of shopping centers in the South Bay. These shopping centers were anchored by Dick's Supermarkets. The chain is no longer in existence but fortunately for us, several of the old signs remain. The first Dick's Shopping Center (1948) was located at 1020 North 4th Street in San Jose (the sign, BTW, is still there). The 2nd (1959) was at 1145 Lawrence Expressway (then called Lawrence Station Road) in Sunnyvale (AKA Dick's Lakewood Shopping Center). The 3rd was at 1400 South San Jose - Los Gatos Road (AKA Bascom Blvd.) in San Jose (the sign for this center is pictured here). The 4th was on the corner of Homestead & Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara.
