In 1941, the San Francisco-based architectural firm Hertzka & Knowles was commissioned for the design of a new hotel following the loss of the Paso Robles Hot Springs Hotel to fire. The principal designer, William H. Knowles, proposed a garden inn concept, catering to roadside travelers. Room wings were constructed around a large central garden and cars could be parked behind rooms. The Paso Robles Inn opened for business in 1942. Owner Edward Roseburg described the property as “not a hotel, not a motel – but a combination of both, capitalizing on the informality and convenience of the motor court but retaining the atmosphere and fine features of a formal hotel…” Today’s Paso Robles Inn retains its unique design and is a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America. The Inn is located at 1103 Spring Street. Highly recommended.
