Experimenting and exploring the Japanese aesthetic concept of Ma as negative space.
Ma is a Japanese aesthetic principle meaning “emptiness” or “absence.” It is the space between objects, the silence between sounds, or the stillness between movements. The term describes both time and space, and is much more than a “lack” of something. The emptiness is, in fact, a palpable entity. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_(negative_space)

Exploring the pre-modern Japanese aesthetic concepts of 'Ma' (negative space) and 'Yohaku' (empty space or what is left out). My limited understanding is these concepts are a pair: ie., they go together. I am still unsure of their difference within their commonality.
'Ma' (non-being) is a complex category in terms of the composition, style, and aesthetics in traditional Japanese ink painting. Here the empty or unpainted areas hold as much significance as the painted elements themselves.
There is some background to pre-modern Japaneses aesthetics influencing my photography on the seascapes in dim light post on the Thoughtfactory website.
