I’ve gotten more into taking pictures of ships of the Great Lakes over the past couple of years. One of the ships that was high on the list to get was the Wilfred Sykes. Normally it never travels to Cleveland as I was told it has been here one other time. Well yesterday marked the second visit and it was a beautiful afternoon along the Cuyahoga. They went down to the steel mill and surprisingly left the mill this morning which made for another round of shots to get of the classic laker. With it being Sunday morning and a holiday weekend, traffic was light on Rt 2 so myself and a few others did the shot looking north off the bridge which isn’t easy since there really isn’t a pull off. The Sykes with assistance from the tug Pennsylvania heads down the Cuyahoga as they are about to duck under NS 1. Once the ship reaches Lake Erie it will turn and burn for Dearborn, Michigan.

I left Owosso, MI on Sunday evening after visiting a friend around 1900 to head back to Cleveland. The weather was cloudy and rainy with a break in the clouds here and there. While approaching Fenton, MI there was a pretty big break in the clouds and some pretty intense storm light. So I said what the hell and got off US 23 and checked the signals on the CN Holly Sub to see if a train was lined. Luck would have it as L507 was lined to come west. I didn’t know where L507 was but figured it had to be somewhat close. So I went to Fish Lake Rd just outside of Holly, MI and hoped for the best. Not even 10 mins later L507 leans into the curve with CN 2225 leading a EMD and a decent sized train in some gorgeous storm light. I’d say it was worth my slight detour.
