Passing under the Northern Pacific cantilevers at Plains, MT, MRL’s Night Gas Local pulls into the siding to set out a loaded car of steel beams before continuing west to the gas plant at Thompson Falls.

I never made it out to Montana for the glory days of Montana Rail Link. Over the past few years I made a handful of trips to photograph the MRL and never came back home disappointed. BNSF will take over operations at midnight on 1/1/24 and another railfan favorite will fade into history. A personal favorite photo of mine happened back in September of 2022. Beautiful afternoon sun shines on MRL 4406 and 4408 as they lead the Night Gas west across Fish Creek trestle on MRL’s 4th Sub.
