This morning, I made the best cup of coffee in the world. I hadn't set out to do it, had not prepared for it, yet I knew it was true, even as I poured the cup. The aroma brought me back to a morning somewhere else, a table on a balcony, rooftops, morning light, a soft breeze. One sip was enough to dispel all doubt, this was the coffee of all coffees, so I hurried off to make a call. When I returned I found you in the kitchen, with a satisfied smile on your face, and an empty mug in your hand. The panelists of the world's best coffee committee arrived only minutes later, yet there was nothing left for them to judge. They inspected the dark residue at the bottom of the mug, and listened to your desperate endorsements, my embarrassed apologies. Then they packed up their things, their trophies, and ribbons, and scoring paddles, and left, disappointment carved into their stern, estimable faces.
