В самом центре Петербурга у Биржевого моста находится копия голландского корабля 18 века. "Летучий Голландец" -Корабль представляет собой приблизительную копию трёхмачтового парусника «Амстердам», построенного в 1748 году в столице Голландии и потерпевшем крушение в начале 1749 года во время торгового похода. Название отсылает нас к легенде о корабле-призраке, который не может пристать к берегу и обречён вечно бороздить моря.
Существует несколько версий этой легенды, основная из которых повествует о том, что когда корабль попал в шторм, пытаясь обогнуть мыс Доброй надежды, капитан (незадолго до этого убивший жениха понравившейся ему девушки, после чего та выбросилась за борт) сказал, что они должны обойти этот мыс во что бы то ни стало, даже если на это уйдёт вечность. Глас с небес сказал: «Да будет так!», и с тех пор корабль не может пристать к берегу.
