This was a regular occurrence on the Raton Pass portion of the ATSF in the 1940’s assisting new shiny diesel electric motors with venerable steam up the pass. The 1941 version of the Super Chief being pulled by E3 number 11L and 11b are assisted by a last moment steam helper to help keep the Wartime traffic traffic on time.
