When one discusses railroad tunnels, probably the last state brought up in that discussion would be Ohio. But the southeast portion of the state borders West Virginia - a.k.a "the Mountain State - and some of these mountains spill over the Ohio River into the Buckeye State. There are currently 16 tunnels in Ohio with active rail lines and numerous others that have been daylighted or bypasses all together. And even a few more that are on abandoned lines as well.

And at one time there were five shortline and regional railroads in the Buckeye State that rostered secondhand Tunnel-Motor locomotives. Up till recently the Ohio Central was one of them, and their trains once ran through five tunnels in Ohio. They had a trio of former Southern Pacific SD40T-2s and here one leads a Morgan Run to Mingo Junction Turn east through the Tuscarawas River valley. Unfortunately, the only T-Motors remaining in Ohio are the three now operated by the Wheeling & Lake Erie. Appropriately enough the Wheeling operates through eight tunnels in Ohio.

T-Motor Tuesday (TMT). An eastbound Morgan Run to Mingo Junction turn heads east through the large cut west of Bowerston on the old Pennsylvania RR Panhandle Route - so named for the lines brief pass through the panhandle portion of West Virginia. The cut bypasses a parallel tunnel. The Pennsy undertook a number of tunnel bypassing projects through this part of eastern Ohio during the 1950s when this was a busy through route between Pittsburgh-Columbus-Indianapolis and on to St Louis.

On a cool September morning, a Cincinnati to Selkirk manifest rolls under the B&O era signal bridge at South Deshler on the Toledo Subdivision.

While browsing through Doug's collection of photos made Tehachapi, I discovered yet another stunning image. This one was captured at Cable, California, as an eastbound Santa Fe train ascends the grade. Mr. Harrop managed to catch the manned helper engines in the same photo, too. Bravo!

A Union Pacific priority piggyback & perishables train rockets through Echo Canyon at ABS 9444, just west of Emory, Utah. Doug must have found this train to his liking (who wouldn't?) as he followed it from his home in Mountain Green all the way to the summit at Wahsatch. Wish I could have joined him!
