The sign post shows the parting of the ways for two long distance paths at Hawsker Bottoms above Maw Wyke Hole, North Yorkshire.

Maw Wyke is a sheltered inlet which has become a regular nesting site for a colony of kittiwakes

The white acorn on the sign post signifies these are official long distance paths

At this point the path incorporates the Cleveland Way (110 miles) and the last section to Robin Hood's Bay of A.W. Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk (190 miles).

Yes the signpost does lean

This is the top of West Lane on the flanks of Nabs a small hill (1030 ft) in the beautiful Nidderdale. Though the dry stone wall is the site of Providence and Prosperous lead mines,

The buildings in the distance which is over the valley containing Ashfold Side Beck is the farmstead of Merryfield

Further left you can see smoke on the moor where they have started burning patches of the older heather to encourage the heather to produce new green shoots to feed red grouse and livestock. This can occur after Oct 1 to March 31 It is an emotive subject

In the foreground is the Leeds - Liverpool Canal looking towards it's first locks as it leaves the River Aire.

The two towers on the right were located in Tower Works on Globe Road and were part of Hardings (Leeds) Ltd and used for dust extraction

The smaller of the two chimney (Thomas Shaw 1864) was modeled on the Lamberri Tower in Verona (Italy) while the larger (William Bakewell 1899) on Giotto's Campanile in Florence, Italy

Also in the photo is the tallest modern building in Leeds which is Bridgewater Place.

Taken in April 2022

This is the path leading into the very wet part of upper Westerdale with the River Esk beginning to gather water in this valley between Westerdale Moor and Howdale Hill.

Despite its rather remote upland location, Westerdale has been farmed for thousands of years. Recently most farms in the lower dale concentrate on grass for grazing and the production of hay and silage as winter feed.

The River Esk rises as numerous small streams in the upper part of Westerdale, known as "The Esklets" – which is close to neighbouring Farndale. Until recently, water was extracted from these streams for public supply but this is no longer the case and the old pumping station stands empty.

The track here is part of the 37-mile walk which follows the River Esk from its source high on the North York Moors to the coast at Whitby. It’s marked by a special waymark with a leaping salmon
