Valletta, capital of the Republic of Malta. It is the smallest capital of an EU member state in terms of both area and population.
As a city of mighty bastions and baroque buildings as well as the splendour of the late Grand Masters, it was given the reputation of being the most magnificent of all European cities as Superbissima.
Named after Jean Parisot de la Valette, the then Grand Master of the Order of Malta

In the area of the Grand Harbour, Fort St. Michael was built under the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, La Sengle, on the southern of the three fingers of land, the peninsula of Isola. This fortification was extended from 1553 and included the town of Senglea, but could not be completed until 1565.
