La Boca, district of Buenos Aires, is located at the confluence of the Riachuelo River and the Río de la Plata, hence its name (Boca = Spanish for "mouth").
Its original houses were built from the sheet metal of scrapped ships and colorfully painted with marine varnish....

La Boca emerged at the end of the 19th century as a neighborhood of Italian immigrants. Many from Genoa.
In 1882, after a long general strike, La Boca broke away from Argentina and the rebels raised the Genoese flag, which was taken down again by then Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca.
