In the background is Chimborazo( 6.300m) and the river rising from it represents the Río Guayas, both symbolizing the beauty and wealth of the Sierra and Costa, respectively.
The steamboat floating in the river also bears the name Guayas; it was built in Guayaquil in 1841 as the first seaworthy steamboat on the West Coast of South America.
Instead of a mast, a staff of Hermes is depicted as a symbol of trade and commerce. Above it, the Golden Sun surrounded by the zodiac signs for Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer, representing the months of March to June, symbolizing the duration of the Liberal Revolution (March Revolution) of 1845.
The condor seated above the escutcheon stretches its wings as a symbol of power, greatness and strength of Ecuador. Flanking the shield are four Ecuadorian flags.
The laurel branch protruding from the flags on the left represent the glory of the Republic (or the glory of the heroes of independence).
The palm branch protruding on the right is a symbol of peace.
The shield stands above a bundle of rods representing the republican dignity.

Quito (San Francisco de Quito) Capital of Ecuador is located 20 km south of the equator in a 2,850 m high basin of the Andes, making it the highest capital in the world.
The city lies directly at the foot of the inactive and non-glaciated volcano Rucu Pichincha 4.700 m.
One has a spectacular view from Quito to the southeast of the volcano Cotopaxi 5.900m. But not with this miseable weather :-(....
