One of England’s oldest pubs is built into stone caves at the foot of Nottingham Castle. It has a charming, wonky interior, resident ghosts and real ales. What more could you ask for?

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is a Grade II listed public house said to have been established in 1189. The building rests against Castle Rock, upon which Nottingham Castle is built, and is attached to several caves, carved out of the soft sandstone. These were reputedly originally used as a brewhouse for the castle, dating from the medieval period.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is one of several pubs claiming to be the oldest in England – others that claim to be the oldest include Ye Olde Salutation Inn and The Bell Inn, also in Nottingham, and Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans in Hertfordshire.

However, The Porch House at Stow on the Wold in the Cotswolds, has been authenticated by the Guinness Book of Records as England's oldest inn. It is certified as dating from 947 AD. Look out for the 16th century stone fireplace in the dining room; it is inscribed with symbols identified as 'witch marks' to protect against evil.
