Taken from my stand-up paddleboard.
The light areas are due to the wind reaching the water surface and the resulting ripples catching the sunlight. Differing patterns are created depending on the strength of the wind.
On calm, windfree days, the lake looks glassy black due to the water's high iron content and the surrounding forested, darkish hills.
