Delicate and fragile with a slow gliding flight, this tropical butterfly species is capable of wandering far from its normal Central American, Mexican and West Indies range according to BugGuide.

Three Mestra species exist, but only M. amymone occurs in North America and it is presumed, based on capture records that it may breed even farther north than South Texas.

This species is also known as the Noseburn Wanderer. It lays its eggs on the noseburn (Tragia urticifolia), a prickly plant covered with stinging hairs. The adults love to nectar on many flowers and wander into many habitats and farther north than other species in this genus.
