Coming out of a sag and cresting a hill west of Marfa, Texas, a Los Angeles bound Z train maintains track speed as it races west. They don't call it the sunset route for nothing!

An UP Z train heads east as I hike to the top of an old cartel lookout near of Shawmut, Arizona. The cartels would use these mountaintop lookouts to guide their coyotes across the desert floor. To the right of the photo is the old right of way alignment at Shawmut.

Five days before Christmas, a hotshot intermodal led by UP 1996 (the Southern Pacific tribute unit) races through the realigned curves at Shawmut, Arizona. The poleline, long shadows and early morning light made for quite a scene.
