The abandoned 2,493 foot long Winston Tunnel. Built in 1888 by the Chicago Great Western, the line was eventually abandoned in 1973 after the the Chicago Northwestern took over.

The 2.6 mile long Cascade Tunnel, used from 1900-1929. With a 1.7% grade on the inside, GN Boxcab electrics built by ALCO and GE were used to pull trains through the tunnel.
On March 1st 1910, an avalanche came down just east of here taking out a stuck passenger train at Wellington, killing 101 people. The Wellington Disaster is deadliest avalanche in US history.
In December of 1925, construction on a new tunnel began. Reasons being due to the Wellington disaster, deteriorating snow shed conditions and constant avalanches. Tunnel construction was headed by Col. Frederick Mears, the recenty victorious engineer and builder of the Alaska Railroad, and the Panama Canal. The new 7.8 mile long Cascade Tunnel was finished in 1929.
