Built in 1921, the IM power plant was one of the largest coal-fired power plants in Belgium. In 2007, the power plant that belonged to the company Electrabel and that supplied the whole region around Charleroi with electricity closed its doors for good. A report revealed that the power plant alone was responsible for 10% of the total CO2 emissions in Belgium. The huge cooling tower allowed the cooling of the water pumped from the Sambre river. It has been able to cool down 1.8 Mio. litres of water per minute.
