Clouds West, Sun East

While one part of the train community woke up last Friday to news of the craziest train in years, I woke up Friday to my version of crazy—CP 6644 was in Hinkle and the sun was out. Some good luck led me here, not bad considering I didn't plan to leave the house and the train left earlier than it was supposed to.

*****

The train is originally CP’s, presumably originating on the now CPKC system somewhere east of the Rockies. It is handed off to the UP at the Kingsgate-Eastport border crossing where it is then run down the UP Spokane Sub into Spokane, down the Ayer Sub to Hinkle Yard (Hermiston), and then along the Portland Sub into Portland where it then goes one of many directions to the export facility designated by its symbol. The 102 grain loads along for this ride are bound for Longview Jct, WA, about an hour north of Portland. Up until two years ago, all trains on the Portland Sub required a UP leader that were equipped with cab signals. Without the requirement in place, just about anything that comes down from Canada with PTC can lead, so long as it makes it past Hinkle.
