A perfectly matched quartet of potent EMD SD40-2s pull a 67-car Hinkle, Oregon to Yermo, California manifest freight through Tooele Valley approaching Warner, Utah on a foggy Feb. 14, 1993.

By the early to mid-1990s, UP had shopped and repainted most of its fleet of SD40-2s. They were looking mighty fine, and were losing prime mainline assignments to the newer comfort cab equipped locomotives. Ditch lights were a new thing on the SD40-2s.

Born into the UP family in June of 1972, 3182 is still riding the rails of the mighty UP. Rebuilt an SD40N 1965 at North Little Rock, the unit was assigned to work locals out of Elko, Nevada by Feb. 2025.

Santa Fe GP60s (in two flavors) head a westbound freight through Abo Canyon, New Mexico, on September 16, 1992. I remember many times I’d be disappointed because I didn’t get an all-Super Fleet consist . . . how times change.
